CPARC would like to announce
its formal name change to The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties.
The organization’s desire to
become The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties reflects the National
and State movement of the Arc to be unified in its message/brand. To
this end, our name utilizes ‘The Arc of’ as an identifier. The Arc has
essentially used an acronym (Arc) to replace what was the wording
'retarded citizens.’ This people first language is consistent with
today’s cultural movement of eliminating labels.
Our programs and services
remain the same.
Additionally, as part of an
update of the organization’s By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation, the
mission was enhanced and condensed to better reflect our identity and,
again, to utilize people first language. The mission now reads:
The mission of The Arc of
Cumberland & Perry Counties is to provide support, training, and
opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities and their
families. The Arc empowers people to achieve their highest level of
independence and become contributing, responsible and proud members of
society. The Arc works to educate the public and to inspire public
policy, and promotes the realization of a fulfilled life for all people.
